2019 James Reese Europe Symposium Concert

Making the Jazz Gumbo

On May 8th 2019 the Historic Brass Society presented a period instrument concert and academic conference at the CUNY Graduate Center in NYC marking the 100th anniversary of the death of James Reese Europe as well as other important but under-represented repertoires in the development of jazz. Europe, killed by his drummer on May 9th 1919, was an important but overlooked musician who anticipated many musical developments later made by Duke Ellington and others. The period-instrument ensemble, led by trumpeter Jimmy Owens, included many leading jazz musicians including Paquito D' Rivera, Jason Moran, Scott Robinson, Dan Block and Bobby Sanabria  plus 20 others all played instruments from the time of WWI. Other music on the program included Latin repertoire from Cuba, Puerto Rico and Brazil that had a fundamental influence on the development of jazz.
