The Joe R. and Joella F. Utley Student Travel Support Award
Several awards are given each year to help undergraduate and graduate students to attend the Society's various events in Europe and the U.S. (the annual Early Brass Festival, sessions and other events organized by the Historic Brass Society)
The Joe R. and Joella F. Utley Student Travel Support Award was established at the 23rd Annual Early Brass Festival in Spartanburg, SC, in 2007 in memory of the collector and long-time HBS member Joe R. Utley http://www.usd.edu/smm/Utley.html. It aims to encourage and help college and university students aged 35 years or under, officially enrolled in accredited academic programs and having career interests that relate to the purposes of the Historic Brass Society, to attend the Society’s various events. The Utley Award consists of a student membership in the Society for one year and partial financial support for travel and lodging in an amount determined by the Award Committee.

Application Procedure
Applications should be addressed to Dr. Sabine Klaus, Joe R. and Joella F. Utley Curator of Brass Instruments, National Music Museum, PO Box 190, Landrum, SC 29356, USA, or sabineklaus@alltel.net or sabine.klaus@worldnet.att.net three months prior to the event the applicant would like to attend. Applications for the 2008 Annual Early Brass Festival in New Orleans will be accepted until June 1, 2008.
Application materials must consist of the following documents (items 1-4):
- A statement of 300 words or less describing the ways in which your academic interests relate to the history and/or study of brass musical instruments.
- Two letters of recommendation written by persons who are familiar with your work and career interests. One of these letters must be submitted on official institutional letterhead by a teacher or professor who can verify your student status.
- Your curriculum vitae.
An estimate of the expenses you are likely to incur by attending the respective event, including travel, accommodations, and meal expenses, as well as incidental expenses.
The following document is optional but may be included with your application, if appropriate:
- If you will propose a paper for the meeting or session you wish to attend, a copy of the abstract should be submitted to the Award Committee and the respective Program Committee.
Notification of Acceptance or Rejection
Applicants are notified of the results two months prior to the respective HBS event; applicants for the Early Brass Festival 2008 in New Orleans are notified by June 15, 2008.
Recipients who do not present a lecture or contribute to a concert may be asked to provide a minimum amount of help with organizational aspects of events, such as assistance with registration, housing, concert or lecture logistics (not to exceed two hours per day).
